IPL 2023: Chennai decimate DC to seal a place in the top two
In their final league game of IPL 2023, Chennai Super Kings secured a convincing 77-run victory against Delhi Capitals at Delhi, solidifying their place in the playoffs.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) concluded the IPL mini auction for the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League on December 23, Friday in Kochi. It was a thrilling affair, as all ten franchises fought tooth and nail to get their desired players in their squad. There were a lot of rags from riches stories as well as the team owners did not shy away from spending a truckload of money on the talented lads.
Meanwhile, the English players made the most headlines for grabbing the most lucrative deals in the mini-auction. England’s seam all-rounder Sam Curran will be the costliest player in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League. Punjab Kings, who came with a purse of INR 32.20 crore in the auction, shelled out a whopping INR 18.50 crore for the young lad. With such a handsome amount, Curran became the most expensive player in the history of the T20 Championship.
The England all-rounder is followed by Australian stalwart Cameron Green. The spin all-rounder delivered a splendid performance during Australia’s tour to India in September 2022. He was well rewarded for his spectacular performance both with the bat and ball as three franchises, namely Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, went all out for him.
In the end, it was the five-time champion who gained the services of the all-rounder for a stunning among of INR 17.50 crore. After the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings lit up the auction by paying a whopping INR 16.25 crore for Ben Stokes. This was the first time that the Yellow Army spent so much amount for a player during the auction.
Interestingly, the veteran English all-rounder caused an intense bidding war between Lucknow Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the Super Kings by going under the hammer. Meanwhile, it was the 2016 champion that had made the first winning bid of the IPL 2023 mini-auction.
A lot of eyes were on Hyderabad during the event as they had the highest purse of INR 42.25 crore. The team spent a good amount of INR 13.25 crore for England batter Harry Brook. Registered at a base price of INR 1.5 crore, Brook saw teams like RCB, RR, and SRH bidding for him.
Apart from Brook, it was Mayank Agarwal who excited the Orange Army. The franchise looked happy while shelling out INR 8.25 crore to acquire the services of the Indian all-rounder. Meanwhile, the Lucknow Super Giants made the most shocking bid of the entire event.
The team raised many eyebrows by picking the West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran for INR 16 crore. A lot of fans found it hard to digest the handsome amount given by the franchise for Pooran.
Coming to Rajasthan Royals, their highest pick for the 2023 season came in the form of Jason Holder. They made a bid of INR 5.75 crore to get the West Indies all-rounder to the team. Delhi Capitals also included two notable players, namely Mukesh Kumar and Rilee Rossouw, for INR 5.5 crore and INR 4.6 crore respectively.
As far as the defending champions, Gujarat Titans, are concerned, they spent the most money on Shivam Mavi. The seamer was picked for INR 6 crore while their other two significant buys included Joshua Little and Kane Williamson. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders were mostly quiet at the event. Bangalore’s highest bid of INR 3.2 crore was for Will Jacks, while the Knight Riders picked Shakib Al Hasan for INR 1.5 crore.
