About the ICC Cricket Rankings
So, what are the ICC Test Team Rankings and what do they mean? Well, these were formerly known as the ICC Test Championship and this is the international ranking system of the ICC (International Cricket Council). Arguably, the most important of these is the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings.
This sees them rank the teams that play Test cricket. These rankings are all based on Internationals that are played as part of the regular test cricket schedule, whether it’s home or away is irrelevant and they are also very useful in helping your cricket betting success rates.
At the end of each Test series, both teams will be awarded points based on a mathematical formula which takes into account the teams’ previous ranking and the end result. Both team’s points from all of their total matches from the last 3 to 4 years will be divided by a figure that is based around the total number of matches and series played. The result will be their rating.
So, if a higher rated team plays a lower rated team and the result is a draw, then the lower rated team will get better ratings from the match than the higher rated team. On average, a standard team that wins and loses in equal measure whilst playing stronger and weaker teams will have a rating of around 100.
It used to be that the highest ranking Test team would be given the ICC Test Championship Mace, until the inauguration of the ICC World Test Championship. Up until 2019, the Mace would be passed to each new team that moved to the top of the list and whichever team was top on 1st April each year would be awarded a cash prize. Currently, Australia is sitting at the top of the rankings, but India, South Africa, England and New Zealand aren’t far off the mark
Official ICC Historical Rankings
In 2003, the ICC started ranking teams and it was Australia that dominated from the get-go. They stayed at the top until 2009, when teams such as South Africa, England, India, Pakistan and New Zealand started to put their names into the hat. Teams aren’t ranked if they haven’t played enough matches. Here are the historical rankings to date since 2003:

Cricket Ranking Calculations
All teams will score points based on series and match results and outcome from the last three to four years. A series must include a minimum of two Tests.
The ranking table will give the total number of points from every series played within the past 1 to 2 years since the May before last, plus all series that were played in the 24 months prior to that. For these, the matches played and points given will count half.
Every May, matches and points that were earned between 3 to 4 years ago will be removed. Also, the matches and points played and eanred between 1 to 2 years ago will drop to a 50% weighting. So, for example, in May 2022, the matches that were played between May 2018 and May 2019 will be removed. Also, the matches played between May 2020 and May 2021 will be dropped to a 50% weightage.
This literally happens overnight, so teams could effectively change their cricket ranking positions in the rankings table without playing a match!
