Kolkata Knight Riders are going through times in the tournament because of the absence of two key players including the likes of skipper Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The two-time champion succumbed to a poor performance in their first game of the competition. 

They suffered a loss by seven runs against Punjab Kings and are reeling in the seventh place in the points table. The KKR skipper Nitish Rana won the toss in the game and opted to ball first. Chasing the score, the Knight Riders ended up with 146 runs in 16 overs before the game was interrupted by rain. Andre Rusell showed good promise as he smacked 35 runs off just 19 balls. However, KKR recorded a loss because of the D/L method.

As far as Royal Challengers Bangalore are concerned, they started the tournament on a dream note. Faf du Plessis-led side is occupying third place in the competition with two points under their belt. Bangalore defeated Mumbai Indians in their first match of the Indian Premier League 2023 by eight wickets. 

MI batted first in the game and scored 171 runs in 20 overs. Karn Sharma was the top bowler for the team with two wickets while Tilak Verma was the lone warrior for Mumbai with an unbeaten knock of 84 runs. Following the score in the second innings, RCB witnessed carnage by their opening batters. Virat Kohli ended up as the top run-scorer with a knock of 82 runs while the skipper also made headlines by adding 73 runs to the scoreboard. The all-rounder Glenn Maxwell also made his presence felt as he hammered 12 runs off just three balls.
