Tip Summary

  • Australia have a lead of 1-0 as they defeated England in the first ODI by six wickets.
  • David Warner and Steven Smith were the picks of the batters for the hosts with knocks of 86 and 80 runs, respectively.
  • David Malan stole all the limelight in the match by smacking his second One Day hundred.

Australia will be hoping to seal the series as they will play against England in the second One Day International of the three-match series at the Sydney Cricket Ground on November 19, Saturday. It was a lackluster performance by Englishmen in the first ODI as the hosts scored a win by six wickets to take a significant lead of 1-0.

Put to bat first, England found themselves reeling at 66-4 in 13.2 overs. The team was very well heading towards a low score. However, Dawid Malan played one of the best knocks of his One Day cricket career. The top-order batter hammered a much-needed century. His knock of 134 off 128 propelled his team to a total of 287 runs.

Chasing the score, Australian batters looked in full form. The top three players, including David Warner, Travis Head, and Steven Smith, added 86, 69, and 80 runs respectively to the scoreboard. With brilliant contributions from the aforementioned players, the team reached a victory in just 46.5 overs.

Though Australia needs to be lauded for their stunning performances, they were not playing against England’s best XI. A handful of England’s main players, like Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, and Adil Rashid, were missing due to fatigue from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. The team fielded a second-string side in the first ODI.

Australia will have the momentum on Saturday. However, they can get tough competition as Jos Buttler hinted towards a change in the playing XI for the Saturday match.

England’s white-ball skipper Jos Buttler was not at his fluent best in the first One Day International. The captain failed to put up a good partnership in the middle as he perished after scoring only 29 runs off 34 balls. However, Buttler will be the most crucial player for England if they wish to make a comeback in the three-match series and not gift an easy win to Australia. The wicketkeeper-batter has a stunning record in One Day Internationals with 4245 runs under his belt in 157 matches at an average of 40.43. He also has 22 fifties and 10 hundred to his name. Also, he has a good batting form as he was England’s top run-getter in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022.

For Australia, the biggest positive from the first One Day International was the good batting display by Steven Smith. The former skipper flaunted his class and talent by playing a knock of 80 runs off 78 balls with the help of nine boundaries and one six. His 43-run partnership with David Warner was instrumental in the run chase of 287 runs. Smith is regarded as one of the best ODI players, with an average of 44.88 in 137 games and 4802 runs. He has also smacked an impressive 28 fifties and 12 hundred at a strike rate of 87.63.

Pat Cummins had a dream debut as Australia’s ODI captain. Not only his team won the match, but Cummins also delivered a praise-worthy performance with the ball. He was the top wicket-taker with three wickets at an economy rate of 6.2. The seamer accounted for the wickets of Philip Salt, James Vince, and Luke Wood. Playing on Saturday, he will be eager to drop another amazing performance to ensure the first ODI series win under his leadership.
