The final One Day International of the three-match series against Afghanistan is extremely important for the Sri Lanka cricket team. The much-hyped game of cricket will be conducted at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on November 30, Wednesday.

Afghanistan caused an upset for favorite Sri Lanka in the first One Day International by 60 runs. It was an exceptional performance both with the bat and ball by the visitors. Batting first, the Afghans registered a score of 294 runs in 50 overs. The opening batter, Ibrahim Zadran, made headlines with his impressive knock of 106 runs. Rahmat Shah and Najibullah Zadran also looked good in the first innings.

Chasing the score, Sri Lanka were restricted to 234 runs. The opening batter Pathum Nissanka gave a good start to the team, but they failed to capitalize on it. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the pick of the bowler for Afghanistan with four wickets under his belt at an economy rate of 5.4.

In the second ODI, Afghanistan again delivered a good batting performance with 228 runs off 50 overs. However, after Sri Lanka batted for 2.4 overs, the rain spoiled the match. Sri Lanka needs to win the final ODI game to save the series. Also, the result of the series will impact Sri Lanka’s chances of direct qualification for the ODI World Cup scheduled in India next year.

The opening batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been the consistent performer for Afghanistan in the three-match ODI series so far. He started the tour with a bang owing to a fifty. In the first One Day International, the wicketkeeper-batter scored 53 runs off 55 balls. His partnership of 84 runs for the first wicket was the highlight of the match. The second game again saw the exploits of Gurbaz. When most of the Afghan batters failed to perform, he recorded a stunning knock of 68 runs. However, his efforts went in vain as the rain canceled the match. The 21-year-old is currently the top run-scorer in the three-match series and he is likely to spill his magic again on the field on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka’s opening batter Pathum Nissanka is likely to be the standout performer for Sri Lanka in the third One Day International against Afghanistan. He was the only positive thing for the hosts in the first match. Despite the failure of most of the batters, Nissanka held his fort while chasing 295 runs in 50 overs. His knock of 85 runs off 83 gave the island nation an excellent platform. However, the lack of support from other batters resulted in a defeat. The 24-year-old has enough experience under his belt with 19 ODIs.
