  • Sri Lanka are currently first in the Group B points table with three victories from as many games.
  • Scotland also have the same number of wins but because of a low net run rate, they are occupying the second place.
  • Tuesday’s game will be a dead rubber as both Scotland and Sri Lanka have already qualified for the Super Six of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023.

In their last league match of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023, Sri Lanka will be playing against Scotland. The Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo will host for the much-fancied game of cricket on Tuesday, January 27. Both Sri Lanka and Scotland formed a part of Group B during the league round and enjoyed a similar fortune.

The Sri Lankan cricket team is currently at the top of the Group B points table with six points to their name courtesy of three wins from as many matches. The island nation started the tournament with a stunning win against the UAE by a massive 175 runs. It was a terrific batting performance by the side as UAE collapsed at 180 runs while chasing a massive score of 356 runs in the allotted 50 overs. Wanindu Hasaranga was the top player with six wickets to his name at an economy rate of three.

Dasun Shanaka & Men looked absolutely stunning in their next match against Oman as well as they scored a victory by ten wickets. Hasaranga again picked five wickets as Oman ended up with only 98 runs in the first innings. It was a cakewalk for Sri Lanka in the second innings as Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne scored 37 and 61 runs respectively to take the team home.

Further in the tournament, Sri Lanka took their winning streak to three by defeating Ireland by 133 runs. The game witnessed the batting exploits of Karunaratne in the first innings as his knock of unbeaten 103 runs steered the team to a score of 325 runs in their allotted 50 overs.

Chasing the score, Ireland ended up with only 192 runs the spin master Wanindu Hasaranga again spilled his magic on the field to pick five wickets. The three massive wins gave a major boost to Sri Lanka’s net run rate and they are thus occupying the first place in Group B points tally.

Just like Sri Lanka, Scotland are also yet to score their first defeat in the 2023 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers. It was a nail-biting thriller for the team in their opening match against Ireland. Andrew Balbirnie’s team scored a decent 286 runs in the first innings and following the score, Scotland won by just one wicket courtesy of the good batting performance by Mark Watt and Michael Leask.

In their second match of the World Cup Qualifiers, Scotland hammered the United Arab Emirates by 111 runs. Batting first, they smacked 282 runs as the skipper Richie Berrington came up with a knock of 127 runs. The bowlers continued the momentum in the second inning as Safyaan Sharif and Chris Sole picked four and three wickets respectively to fold UAE at a score of 171 runs.

Scotland’s most recent win in the Championship came against Oman by 76 runs. Again the batters led from the front by scoring 320 runs in the first innings. It was a big total to chase for Oman and thus they ended up with only 244 runs. With six points and a slightly lesser net run rate than Sri Lanka, Scotland are second in the Group B table.
